The sun shining beaches of Sri Lanka are around the island as seen from the map. The seas are warm. The west coast and southern beaches are best from October to March. The East coast beaches are best during March and October.

Following are few of the breath-taking beach locations in Sri Lanka...

 

01. WEST COAST

• Beruwala – About 56 km drive from Colombo. Very Good beach for bathing safely. A fishery harbor too is in Beruwala.

• Mount Lavinia –This is the closest beach to Colombo. Just 12 km from Colombo City. A popular place for bathing and relaxing. The sand is very soft and the waves too calm.

• Kalutara – About 43 Km drive from Colombo. This is a great Beach and River with water sports and adventure facilities. Kalutara is the place where Kalu ganaga (River) meets the sea and also Kalutara is famous for the Kalutara bodiya, the world's only hollow Buddhist shrine.

02. SOUTH COAST

• Bentota beach & the river is one of the best water sport area in the island. You can experience the boat ride in the river and study the mangroves. About 65 km from Colombo.

• Hikkaduwa – Popular for Scuba Diving, skin diving, glass bottom boat rides and coral reefs. The beach is with smooth golden sand and entertaining night life is also popular. 98 km south of Colombo.

• Unawatuna - About 5 km south of Galle is the golden beach of Unawatuna. It is also one of the safest beaches in Sri Lanka as it is protected by a natural reef. Surfing, snorkeling diving and sea fishing are some of the water sports you can experience here.

• Weligama- 27 km from Galle and is famous for stilt fishing. You too can experience the stilt fishing there.

• Mirissa- is situated about 4km southwest of Weligama. A small town, a fishing harbor together with a beautiful beach makes it something special. It is a peaceful beach with crystal clear water which is ideal for snorkeling.

• Tangalle- Situated 195 km from Colombo, this is the ideal location for a sun bathing. Turtle watching can be done at Rekawewa.

03. EAST COAST

• Trincomalee - 257 km from Colombo, Trincomalee is the ideal location for beach lovers.

• Nilaweli - Yet another finest beaches in the island. The sands of beach & the blue water is a unique identification of Nilaweli beach.
  Also, you can have a trip to Pigeon Island where you can enjoy as much as you want in your own way.

• Arugam Bay - 314 km from Colombo, a most beautiful bay with good surfing. Arugam Bay is one of the top ten surfing points in the world. The season is between May and November for surfing at Arugam Bay with the predominant wind.
  
  

• Kalkudah- A finest beach in east coast on the way to Batticaloa 32 km. from Batticaloa, Kalkudah, with its clear calm reef protected sea is ideal for bathing. Passekudah, close by, has a fine bay with clear waters. A popular tourist center with a modern hotel and other facilities.

   

04. NORTH WEST COAST

• Kalpitiya- Beac and lagoon is available which is a location for diving lagoon.

• Marawila- This beach is calm and quite those who wish to relax .

• Negombo - This beach is for a relaxing holiday with all facilities and very popular all over the world. Close proximity to the airport.
